Saturday evening I attended an event called the Helping Hurting Women Conference at the Solomon Calhoun Community Center in St. Augustine, Florida. The presenter of the conference was Rhonda D. Felder, author of Feel Me: A Book of Poetry.
Rhonda read a moving and insightful poem entitled “The Great Masquerade”. She is a master at poetry and expresses her feelings through her dramatic writing.
Several survivors of domestic violence told us their heartbreaking stories of abuse, but also inspired us through their strength and healing. Betty Griffin House advocates provided information about the organization and safety shelter. Others contributed to the presentation with prayers and songs.
I attended with my friend, Lauren Makarov, author of Reflecting on Domestic Violence. I enjoyed listening to some very passionate members of the community discuss this prevalent issue and what we can do to prevent it.
If you’re being abused or know someone who is, please call the National Domestic Violence Hotline for help. 1-800-799-7233.
Remember, if we can help just one victim, we’ve done our job.
